I had originally thought of having Godzilla fight the American Godzilla (GINO, or Godzilla In Name Only), as was staged in Godzilla: Final Wars. The problem was that I would have had to pay somewhere between $40,000 and $60,000 for 30 seconds of CGI footage to be presented on stage at Masquerade, and… OK, maybe not. I just didn’t want to build another equally elaborate costume.

I decided to have Godzilla fight a stupid monster that would be an easy target, and that would get the audience excited. What better target than Barney, the Purple Kid-Pacifying Dinosaur? So, I started sewing a bodysuit from a pattern, which I had altered to add the green center blob and Barney’s larger tail. Also, I figured the Barney bodysuit would be good practice for Godzilla’s bodysuit, which I wanted to be of higher quality. |
The structure of Barney’s head is formed from foam pool noodles glued to an old bike helmet. Then, I used plastic cross-stitch fabric to give it the contours I wanted and to fill things in.

After that, I skinned it with some thin foam rubber in spots, and more of the purple-pinkish fabric.
